No More Lost Mothers

*Black mothers in the U.S. are dying at 3 to 4 times the rate of white mothers.

Dr. Shalon fought for the health of vulnerable communities. Now we’re fighting for women like her.

We believe structural racism is the core of the issue. If Dr. Shalon’s medical providers had taken action instead of dismissing her concerns, we believe her tragedy could have been prevented (like 60% of all pregnancy-related deaths).

*According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • The pregnancy-related maternal mortality ratio for Black women in Georgia is 47 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to 14.3 deaths per 100,000 live births for white women.

  • Between 2012-2014, 18% of pregnancy-related deaths in Georgia occurred during pregnancy and 82% occurred during the postpartum period.

  • Georgia’s own health experts believe that more than half of confirmed pregnancy-related deaths in the state are preventable.
